Brown County Dairy Promotions is pleased to offer the following programs to the students of Brown County FREE OF CHARGE! Go to the calendar page to book your classroom time now!

NOTE: Howard Suamio & Pulaski School districts have the special honor or working with the Wisconsin Dairy Council Representative in our area, Karen Doster, for all school programs this year. Please email her directly at kdoster@wmmb.org to schedule your classroom presentation or request a tentative time on the calendar (any day you like) and she will reply about its availability.

Red Barn Learning Centers will be requested through the online calendar and managed by the Brown County Dairy Promotions Coordinator.

Out and About at the Dairy Farm
Kindergarten - 1st Grade
40 minutes

The dairy farm comes to your students! Students hear about life on a dairy farm through the book “Out and About at the Dairy Farm.” After listening to the story, students get to see actual items from a dairy farm and even pretend to milk a cow! Students receive a “My Farm to Family” activity book and cow eraser and your classroom keeps the book.

Mooing, Milking & Munching
2nd - 3rd Grade
40 minutes

Students learn about cheese through the book "Mooing, Milking and Munching" (developed by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board). After listening to the story, students participate in a cheese tasting activity. At the end of the program, students will understand the process of turning milk into cheese as well as tasting first hand what makes different types of cheese unique! Each student will receive a free copy of the book that we read in class.


Taste Wisconsin
4th Grade
50 minutes

This interactive lesson for the 4th grade classroom highlights the impact of agriculture in Wisconsin and compliments the 4th grade Wisconsin social studies unit. A great way to connect the farm to the grocery store. String cheese samples for each student and the classroom or school gets to keep the 3+ foot tall red barn display (while supplies last)!

Got Milk
5th Grade
35 minutes

Students will learn about the 9 essential nutrients that milk provides by pulling items out of a giant milk carton. Each student will receive a milk activity sheet, and each classroom will receive a poster.  String cheese will be given to all participants following the program.

Scream for Ice Cream!
Special Event
50 minutes

Students learn all about ice cream and how it is mae. We will cover important dairy and calcium facts including those specific to ice cream. The program concludes with students making, and sampling, ice cream they make in a "high energy" kind of way! Students receive their own ice cream scoop at the end of the program!

Items to be provided by school : TV/VCR for video and spoons for each student. Gym or outdoor space is best for this program. Easily adaptable to large groups with teacher's assistance.

A Very Dairy Christmas
November 23rd - December 23rd, 2011 ONLY
4th & 5th Grade
40 minutes

An interactive trivia puzzle game about Wisconsin dairy products and agriculture all presented with a festive flair!
Each student will receive a special dairy gift box that also contains a puzzle piece.  Students will open their gift to reveal an item that will be an answer to one of the trivia questions.  Upon correctly answering the question that their gift relates to they will then add their gift box puzzle piece to the puzzle!  After all questions are answered correctly the puzzle will reveal a holiday dairy picture. All classes will finish the presentation with cookies and milk and a grade appropriate story or video.

Brown County Dairy Promotions is pleased to offer the following Red Barn Learning Centers (RBLC) to the educators of Brown County FREE OF CHARGE! These centers contain all of the items you need to complete an agriculture-based activity plus many of additional resources and activity ideas for many grade levels. Resources may include books, videos, activity pages, posters, and informational sheets to assist you in educating your students on the topic of the RBLC. See the table of contents list for each center below for complete list of contents!

The RBLC are available for check-out in two week increments. The center will be delivered to and picked up from your school. To check out a RBLC for your classroom or school, please click “Calendar” (located on navigation bar to the left) then follow the link to the “Red Barn Learn Centers Calendar”, and follow the steps to schedule a date that works best for your school. (Note: More then one teacher at the same school can use the kit at the same time!)

Click on the activity to see more details about the activity supplied with the RBLC and to see what supplies the classroom needs to supply. Don’t forget there are many other activities ideas for other grade levels in each kit.

All About Corn & Popcorn! (grades K-5)
Students will enjoy learning about corn, popcorn, and their impact in Wisconsin.

Activities:
Grade K-2 Activity: Make a Paper Corn Stalk
Grade 3-5 Activity: Make Biodegradable Corn Plastic from corn ingredients (microwave needed)

All About Dairy! (grades K-1)
Build your own cow and learn all about cows! Let students get creative designing their dairy cow. For a fun study guide, let them decorate the front and take notes about “dairy” interesting facts on the back.

This kit is best for the younger grades, but does contain videos and a few activities for other grades.

Dirt has never tasted so good! Students learn about the various layers of soil and their importance by building each layer with food items.

Soy Bean Science Kit (grades 4-9)
Grade appropriate lessons and experiments for students to learn all about soy beans. See the Soybean Science tab for complete details.

 

Wisconsin Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) has been offered an exciting opportunity to partner with the Wisconsin Soybean Program in educating Wisconsin elementary and middle school teachers and their students about soybeans and their many uses in food, household products, newspaper ink, and alternative fuels.

The Soybean Science Kit and curriculum, designed by researchers at Purdue University, uses soybeans to introduce students in grades 4-9 to science and its fundamentals, highlighting the principles of using biological, renewable resources. The kit will include everything necessary for 30 students to participate in 21 hands-on experiments and exercises. It also includes two biotechnology lessons, an interactive CD-ROM and an instructional video tape. All lessons are aligned to National Science Education Standards.

All of the supplies needed to conduct the experiments are included in the kit – a $400 value. The kit is available free of charge for you to check out and use with your students. Brown County Dairy Promotions will restock the kit with supplies as needed.

The kit can be checked out in one month increments.

  • Make note of any supplies that are low and need to be restocked.
  • Provide usage information on the kit by keeping track of how many teachers and students used the lessons and/or materials in the kit.

Wisconsin Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom 2011-12 Essay Contest for 4-5th grade students

The 2011-12 Essay Contest topic is:
“Why crops and plants are important to Wisconsin agriculture.”

Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom offers an annual essay contest for fourth and fifth grade students. Each year the topic has specific lesson plans, activities and other resources that teachers and home school parents can use to teach about Wisconsin agriculture.  Each county will choose a County winner and that person will be entered into the state contest!

The 2011-12 Essay Contest topic is:
“Why crops and plants are important to Wisconsin agriculture.”
